Hudson Farmers Market Tackling Local Hunger Needs in More Ways Than One Minimize

Hudson -- For five years the Hudson Farmers Market on the Green has been serving the community with fresh fruits and vegetables. And now for the second year it is tackling the hunger needs of the less fortunate.

Each week, at the end of each market session, vendors donate fresh food products and take them to a spot on East Main and Division streets. The items are picked up by members of St. Mary's Social Action committee and are disbursed to families in need, the elderly and shut-ins.

"A few weeks into the 2010 season, the Hudson Farmers Market Board decided to use the market as a conduit to funnel fresh produce from our vendors to families and people in need of healthy fresh food in the Hudson area," said market manager J Hudson.

Jay Schulman, board president, and the Rev. Sue Tinker, former board member, contacted Mary Lou Morse at Hudson Community Service about ways they could help the hungry in the community. Morse then contacted Kelley Spear, coordinator of the social action committee at St. Mary Church.

"Each vendor donates what he or she wants each week," said Hudson. "We remind the vendors of the program but we, in no way, solicit or pressure them into giving."

Some of the vendors donate crates of fresh vegetables, and others donate cheese, bread, muffins, jellies and a variety of meats, according to Hudson.

"This really gives a leg up to people in Hudson who are experiencing hard times," said Spear. "A tremendous amount of people here need help. Some of the people are still employed but their wages have been frozen and then cut. They're having a tough time making it."

Speak said the farmers market program is critical for feeding the hungry in town, providing fresh produce to those who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

"If we give a family a food voucher, they'll stock up on canned foods and other inexpensive foods, but when the farmers donate, the families are getting fresh produce that is pristine. It's like having a filet," Spear said.

Sometimes the donations fill a shopping bag or two, and sometimes the donations fill her entire vehicle, Spear reports.

"This truly is an astounding program. The farmers and vendors are so enthusiastic. We cannot thank them enough," Spear said.

The Hudson Farmers Market is a project of Leadership Hudson under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Hudson Clocktower. The market is open each Saturday on the Green from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

7th Annual Taste of Hudson Teams up with Hudson Farmers Market for Labor Day Weekend 

May 6, 2011 – Hudson, Ohio – The 7th Annual Taste of Hudson scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, Sunday, September 4 and Monday, September 5, has teamed up with Hudson Farmers Market to create an extended Farmers Market presence throughout Labor Day weekend. Both organizations, projects of the Rotary Club of Hudson Clocktower and its Leadership Hudson curriculum, are very proud to announce this unique arrangement.

Taste of Hudson Executive Director, Andy Malitz, announced “After a couple of years of discussing how to do this, Taste of Hudson is excited to have the Hudson Farmers Market as part of Hudson’s premier event. This alignment is great for all involved as it further extends the breadth and variety of Taste of Hudson attractions that have made the festival one of Ohio’s finest. It also gives Taste of Hudson attendees, many of whom visit from throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond, another “taste” of what other great events take place in Hudson. For the vendors of the Farmers Market, being a part of Taste of Hudson gives them the opportunity to market their produce and products and the weekly Farmers Market to the many thousands of attendees”.

Taste of Hudson, co-presented by Akron Children’s Hospital and Akron General, is one of Ohio’s finest two-day lifestyle festivals featuring over twenty restaurants, eight stages with over 100 live performances, a wine and beer garden, a luxury automobile show, over fifty exhibitor tents, children’s and family activities and a fine art fair.
